I offer a baby-paced learning experience in the comfort of your own home. I typically like to see you put the baby to the first breast and while baby is feeding, discuss ways to improve positioning, latch, or whatever the concern is.  If we have to we can unlatch baby and try new tactics, otherwise we will wait until the second side to change anything.  I prefer to wait if it isn't going to cause harm, so that mothers can really see the difference between the two sides and different approaches.  The second side is usually a joint attempt by me and mom to try a different technique. If you are using a pump, I like to assess how you use this as well.

I have moms fill out paperwork when time permits, usually between feeds, but sometimes before the first feed if baby is not yet ready.

Most mothers are comfortable at this point, and will just follow up with me by phone, but some mothers prefer I stay until baby has fed again so that they are able to practice the new techniques and be critiqued, giving them much more confidence.A typical assessment of this type usually takes an hour or so with an established breastfeeding mom and baby, or slightly longer  with a new breastfeeding pair or with multiples. This is usually the extent of face-to-face consulting most women need, however, many will have me return for one or two more times for shorter durations.  Follow-up home visits may be required if your baby is small, you have cracked nipples, or if there is a significant problem.

I follow up with every client with at least one phone call, but more if necessary.
